Calumet Environmental Center
UrbanLab’s proposal for Calumet’s Environmental Center demonstrates the integration of nature, sustainable design, and education. The master plan includes gardens, outdoor classrooms, children's play spaces, several native landscape types, innovative stormwater management approaches including bioswales and rainwater recirculation, and interpretive signage. The environmental center building provides welcoming indoor and outdoor spaces in which tour groups, volunteers, and school children gather to learn about nature in Chicago. As an educational center, the building offers spaces for formal presentations and active learning in classrooms and laboratories. Less formal learning takes place in exhibition spaces and the café. Interpretive displays and literature, including self-guided tours and signage along the trail system complete the educational mission.
