MCA Plaza
The project invigorates the plaza at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) by bringing outside many of the activities that exist only inside the museum. As a new space for cultural events, the plazascape provides several opportunities for the MCA to function more like a Kunsthalle, allowing the public to experience and participate in the work and ideas of contemporary artists. With new public spaces for performances, exhibitions, information displays, lectures, gatherings, tours, and special day/evening events, the project re-energizes the plaza, and blurs the boundaries between the museum and the city. Comprising a series of micro-plazas at varying levels, the plazascape is connected by a circulation system that resembles an undulating natural landscape. Wrapping around the MCA’s perimeter, the new landscape features programmable interstitial spaces between the micro-plazas, unexpected visual connections and a sense of discovery.
